Teacher Lab During the COVID-19 Crisis

The COVID-19 global crisis is changing the way the world does things. Most families in my little corner of the world have been on lock-down for nearly three weeks. A new normal is setting in. And with it, the education landscape is rapidly changing.

Schools are preparing to engage learners in safe and uncomplicated online environments. This will require many teachers to evolve their skills as well. All the teachers I work with are doing some heavy lifting with education going online.

If you are one of them and you are forced on a fastrack to get tech-savvy, learn to teach and assess learners using online apps, and balance work and home from the “comfort” of your home, you are not alone.

Though several educational partnerships and businesses are building their capacity to meet the rapidly increasing needs of learners across all socio-economic backgrounds in India, it adds another layer of complexity for teachers. We now have the task of sifting through the myriad of online apps and services and deciding the best option for our group of learners.

From one educator to another, know that these decisions don’t have to be as daunting as they sound. I hope to update these pages with simple guidelines and best practices that schools across India will be adopting in the days to come. My hope is to help educators navigate the uncertain terrain of online education during a time of crisis, and eventually when this new normal becomes routine.

The best way to accomplish that is by experimenting together and sharing our experiences in teacher-labs. The options presented are only as useful as the feedback received from educators such as yourself. So, let’s put our lab coats on and begin to test these uncharted educational opportunities together.
